CARI’98 is the fourth conference of a series dedicated to African research in Computer Science. This series was jointly initiated by the United Nations University (UNU), the University of Yaounde and the French Institute for Research in Computer Science and Control (INRIA). These biennial meetings are mainly sponsored by the French Ministry for Cooperation in addition to the involved institutions. For each issue, a new partner joined the organizing committee :
The success of the conferences can be measured by the number of attendees which started from 180 in Yaounde to over 250 thereafter with a geographic spreading on more than 30 countries including eighteen African nations. Thanks to a new opening with North Africa, 195 paper submissions were received of which 68 were selected.
Every issue of the conference has been preceded by a two-days tutorial organized by CIMPA on topics ranging from theoretical computer science to applications. The latter concerns especially themes related to development. For CARI’98, one theme has already been selected : security in computer science. It will be sponsored by AUPELF-UREF.
A permanent scientific committee was established in Yaounde during CARI’92. It is composed of two colleges : African researchers and representatives of institutions (UNU, INRIA, ORSTOM, CIRAD). It is elected for :
The CARI experience is no longer a single conference but a melting pot for encouraging high level education and research in computer science in Africa. It is based on strong partnerships with northern institutions which bring scientific and financial support as well.
As for the previous conferences, all topics of computer science will be covered in 1998. The reviewers committee especially wish to promote research results which are obtained from joint African projects and which involve young researchers working for their Ph’D entirely in Africa or part time in Africa and Europe.
Contributions submission
Authors are invited to submit contributions in French (with an abstract in English) or in English (with an abstract in French), on their most recent research results. Researchers from Africa are especially encouraged to submit a paper. The autors can send their paper, either to the Public Relations Department of INRIA, or to the Ecole Supérieure Polytechnique of Dakar. Five copies of the full text (12-15 double spaced pages, title and abstract included) should be sent before January 15, 1998 to the above choised address.
The best communications will be published in the international journal : Techniques et Sciences de l’Informatique.
