CARI: 20 years of Computer Science in Africa

Marc Kokou Assogba: Président du CARI 2008, enseignant à l’école polytechnique d’Abomey-Calavi et chercheur au LETIA. « J’ai entendu parler du CARI en 1994, alors que je m’inscrivais en thèse à Paris 12. Notre laboratoire a reçu l’affiche de 1998, date de ma 1re participation. En 1999, j’ai déposé une communication, acceptée, pour le CARI 2000, qui m’a donné l’opportunité de passer 5 mois au Laboratoire SIP-CRIP à Paris 5. Mes travaux dans ce laboratoire ont donné lieu à une communication au CARI 2004. J’ai alors été élu au comité permanent. Le CARI est bien la manifestation centrale de mes activités de recherche ! »

Chaired CARI 2008, teaches at Abomey-Calavi engineering school and is a LETIA researcher. “I heard about CARI in 1994, while enrolling for my PhD at Paris 12 university. Our lab received the poster in 1998, which is when I first attended. In 1999, I submitted a paper, which was accepted, for CARI 2000, which gave me the opportunity to spend 5 months at the SIP-CRIP Laboratory in Paris 5. My work in this lab gave rise to a paper for CARI 2004. I was then elected to the standing committee. CARI is the lynchpin of my research activities!”

Lala Andrianamampianina:  Enseignant-chercheur à l’université d’Antananarivo. Président-fondateur du Network information center Madagascar depuis 1997.« J’ai présenté en 1994 mon premier article pour un colloque africain. Je faisais partie des chercheurs engagés pour le développement d’Internet en Afrique et signataires de la “ Déclaration de Ouagadougou ”. Fin 1994, l’IRD a installé un nœud du réseau RIO à Antananarivo et le “.mg ” a été créé. Les réseaux de chercheurs découlant du CARI ont permis de pallier en partie l’éloignement géographique, qui est un handicap pour Madagascar. À l’issue de SARIMA, une dizaine de HDR et de thèses, des ateliers, séminaires, écoles et une cinquantaine de publications ont été réalisées. Nous espérons de meilleurs résultats encore pour notre équipe malgache du LIRIMA».
Research-lecturer at the University of Antananarivo. President-founder of the Network Information Centre Madagascar since 1997. “In 1994, I presented my first article for an African conference. I was one of the researchers working on Internet development in Africa and signed the ‘Ouagadougou Declaration’. In late 1994, IRD installed a RIO [Inter-tropical Computer Network] hub in Antananarivo and the “.mg” TLD was created. The network of researchers flowing through CARI helped to partly vercome the geographical remoteness, which is a handicap for Madagascar. Around ten research director accreditations, theses, workshops, seminars, schools and some fifty publications have been created as a result of SARIMA. We are hoping for still better results for our Madagascan LIRIMA team.”

Ali Badara Kaba: Chargé du suivi des programmes de la commission de l’Union Économique et Monétaire Ouest Africaine (UEMOA) Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso. « Au CARI 94, j’étais un chercheur junior venant d’un pays du nord (la France). Un bon souvenir ! Pendant 16 ans, j’ai participé au CARI en tant que chercheur du sud (Burkina Faso). Le CARI a stimulé le développement des TIC dans les pays organisateurs, ce qui contribue significativement au développement de ces pays ».
Monitor of West African Economic and Monetary Union(WAEMU ) commission programmes, Ouagadougou,Burkina Faso. “At CARI 94, I was a junior researcher from a northern country (France). Happy memories! For 16 years, I attended CARI as a researcher from the South (Burkina Faso). CARI has stimulated ICT development in host countries, making a substantial contribution to development in those countries.”

Ibrahim Lokpo Director-General of population and capacity improvement [under Ivory Coast development ministry], research-lecturer at Institut National Polytechnique Félix Houphouët-Boigny (INP-HB), Ivory Coast. “In 1992, I was doing supply work as a research lecturer. During an interview, Dr Jean Kouakou encouraged me to take an interest in the emerging African conference project and advised me to come with him to Cameroon. Budget limitations meant I was unable to attend the first CARI. For the second event, in Ouagadougou, the ENSTP [Ivory Coast national civil engineering school] paid for my travel and accommodation.On my return, Professor Saliou Touré, a famous Ivorian mathematician, president of the country’s Mathematics Society, offered me a role as vice-president with responsibility for ‘mathematics users’. CARI was therefore my good luck charm!”
Directeur général de la population et du renforcement des capacités, enseignant-chercheur à l’Institut National Polytechnique Félix Houphouët-Boigny (INP-HB). « En 1992, je faisais des vacations en tant qu’enseignant-chercheur. Lors d’un entretien, le Dr Jean Kouakou m’a encouragé à m’intéresser au projet émergent de colloque africain et m’a conseillé de venir avec lui au Cameroun. Faute de budget, je n’ai pu participer à ce premier CARI. Pour la deuxième édition, à Ouagadougou, l’ENSTP a assuré mon voyage et mon séjour. À mon retour, le Professeur Saliou Touré, célèbre mathématicien ivoirien, président de la Société Mathématique de Côte d’Ivoire, m’a proposé d’être son vice-président en charge des “ utilisateurs de mathématiques ”. Le CARI a ainsi été mon porte-bonheur ! »

Amel Ben Abda: Enseignante-chercheur à l’ENIT/LAMSIN de Tunis, elle a coordonné le réseau tunisien dans le projet SARIMA et est fortement impliquée dans le réseau Tam-Tam. « Mon premier CARI a été celui de Hammamet. J’ai communiqué à la session suivante et je me suis associée à l’aventure CARI en devenant membre du comité permanent. Le CARI m’a donné l’occasion de découvrir des disciplines transverses (Math-Info), comme le calcul parallèle ou les vérifications formelles. Le CARI a renforcé mes liens avec la communauté des mathématiciens appliqués maghrébins ».
Research-lecturer at ENIT/LAMSIN in Tunis, she coordinated the Tunisian network in the SARIMA project and is heavily involved in the Tam-Tam network. “Hammamet was my first CARI. I spoke at the next event, and I joined the CARI adventure by becoming a standing committee member. CARI has given me the opportunity to discover cross-functional (maths-IT) disciplines, such as parallel processing or formal verification. CARI has strengthened my ties with the Maghreb community of applied mathematicians.”

Georges Edouard Kouamou: Chargé de cours à l’École Nationale Supérieure Polytechnique de Yaoundé. Membre du LIRIMA, Intervenant dans des Universités d’État du Cameroun. « Mon premier article pour le CARI a été accepté en 1996. En 2002, j’ai participé à ce colloque pour la première fois à Yaoundé, en tant qu’auteur. Le CARI constitue un cadre idéal de rencontre entre chercheurs africains, y compris ceux de la diaspora. Grâce au programme post-doctoral, j’ai pu bénéficier du financement de l’UNU en 2003, un vrai coup de pouce pour les jeunes chercheurs ».
Junior fellow at Yaoundé national engineering school. LIRIMA member, Guest speaker in Cameroon State Universities. “My first article for CARI was accepted in 1996. In 2002, I attended the conference for the first time in Yaoundé, as an author. CARI is the ideal forum for African researchers to meet, including those now living elsewhere. Thanks to the post-doctorate programme, I was able to receive UNU funding in 2003, a real leg-up for young researchers.”

 Alex Corenthin: Il était en 1992 tout jeune chef du département d’informatique de l’université Cheikh Anta Diop (Dakar). Il a présidé le CARI 1998. « Le CARI a été ma première occasion de rencontrer la communauté de chercheurs et de parler du développement de l’informatique en Afrique. Le CARI m’a permis d’acquérir une précieuse expérience dans le domaine de la coopération internationale.Point d’orgue de cette collaboration : l’accueil à Dakar en 1998 de la 4e édition du colloque».


In 1992, he was the very young head of the computing department at Cheikh Anta Diop University (Dakar). He chaired CARI in 1998. “CARI was my first opportunity to meet the researcher community and talk about the development of computer science in Africa. CARI allowed me to acquire invaluable experience in the field of international cooperation. High point of this collaboration – the 4th conference being held in Dakar in 1998.”

Rajae Aboulaïch: Professeure à l’École Mohammadia d’ingénieurs à Rabat, membre du comité de programme du CARI, directrice adjointe du LIRIMA. « J’ai découvert le CARI en 2004, et avec lui ce qui se faisait sur mon continent. Auparavant, j’étais plutôt tournée vers le Nord ou vers le Maghreb, et j’ignorais les travaux scientifiques menés en Afrique subsaharienne. Le niveau scientifique, l’enthousiasme, la vision coopérative et le respect mutuel entre collaborateurs du Nord et du Sud m’ont encouragée à m’investir dans ce réseau ».
Professor at Mohammadia engineering school in Rabat, Morocco, member of the CARI programme committee, deputy director of LIRIMA. “I discovered CARI in 2004, and what it was doing on my continent. Previously, I used to concentrate on the North or Maghreb, and I knew nothing about scientific work carried out in sub-Saharan Africa. The level of science, the enthusiasm, cooperative viewpoint and mutual respect between those involved from North and South all encouraged me to get properly involved in this network.”

Abderrahmane Sbihi: Directeur de l’École Nationale des Sciences Appliquées de Tanger, Maroc et président du CARI 2010. « À la lecture des actes du CARI 2000, j’ai soumis deux articles, retenus, pour l’édition suivante. Depuis, j’ai assisté à tous les CARI. Juniors ou seniors, cette manifestation est une expérience enrichissante pour les chercheurs. Grâce au sérieux de la conférence, à l’engagement des partenaires institutionnels, à la rigueur du comité scientifique, le CARI est de plus en plus reconnu dans la communauté scientifique ! »
